MSc/Dip/Cert in Pain Management
Programme Content and Structure
The curriculum is completed entirely online from one's own home or office during times that are convenient to the schedule of today's busy healthcare practitioner . Our virtual learning environment is comprised of study guides, lecture notes, textbook and journal excerpts, and online assessments. For a demonstration of our virtual learning environment, please see http://www.anaes.med.ed.ac.uk/univ/WebCTDemo.html
A key feature of the programme is the interactive online discussions, which enable students from a range of disciplines to bring unique perspectives to a range of clinical problems. Online discussion groups offer students additional opportunities to interact with teaching staff and peers.
The four compulsory core courses of the programme provide a solid foundation in the fundamentals of pain management, while the electives offer students the opportunity to explore areas of interest in more depth and to tailor the programme to their own clinical needs.
This programme leads to the award of a Master of Science degree, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate in Pain Management depending on the number of courses completed satisfactorily:
Master of Science

Postgraduate Diploma

Postgraduate Certificate

The programme runs over two 15 week semesters:
Semester 1: September – December
Semester 2: January – April
The MSc/Dip/Cert in Pain Management is offered as a part time programme, providing students the opportunity to adopt a more flexible approach to their learning. By offering the opportunity to enrol on a flexible education programme, students are more effectively able to plan their education and also tailor their education to funds available. Students will also be better able to tailor their education to their lifestyle, work, and personal commitments. Students will be able to take courses as and when necessary to complete their award. Please note however, that specific courses are only offered at certain times of the academic year and that the core courses must be taken in sequential order. Electives can only be taken after the core courses are completed.
The maximum time limit for completion of awards are:
- Certificate in Pain Management - 2 years
- Diploma in Pain Management - 4 years
- Masters of Science in Pain Management - 6 years
It would be expected that students allocate approximately 20 hours per week during semester time to their studies. This time allocated may vary with your level of experience and previous academic study. Study time is spread between online activities, discussion, reading and resource exploration.
